Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) ... crocodylus from the Greek krokodeilos literally means pebble worm (kroko = pebble; deilos = worm, or man) referring to the appearance of a crocodile. Niloticus means of the Nile. Body length = 6m. Weight can be up to 700 Kg. They are grey to olive-green in colour with a yellowish underbelly and have thick, plated skin, long tails and webbed hind feet. Their powerful jaws contain dozens of cone-shaped teeth. Their eyes, ears and nostrils are situated on top of their heads, so they can see, hear and breathe while the rest of their body remains hidden underwater. Nile crocodiles are found in a wide range of river, lake and swamp environments. They feed on fish and large mammals, such as zebra and wildebeest, that come to drink at the water's edge. Crocodilians are supreme predators and have been on earth, largely unchanged, for about 100 million years. These pictures were taken at the Lalele Crocodile Farm in Limpopo, South-Africa ... where the adults live to 120 years old but the juveniles are killed to make leather for handbags etc. at 4 years old.
