The new route for the AT due to trail erosion on the higher route. You will note that the AT is not a particularly wide trail in many spots. In fact, having a good pair of ankles is a necessity as rocks and uneven soil will test you. These blaze markers mark the Trail all the way to Maine. You find them on posts like this, on trees, on rocks and in New Hampshire and Maine you find piled up mounds of rocks called "cairns" that are used to mark the trail.
