Northern Carmine Bee-eater (Merops nubicus)

Prufu Swamp, near Basse Santa Su

A large colourful Bee-eater which, when seen in the warm light of sunrise/sunset is simply stunning.
Unfortunately this image was taken in the harsh light of midday!

To see this bird in The Gambia requires a long weary, dusty journey upcountry to the bustling town of Basse.

A most unusual combination of colors in a great pose.

Very beautiful! Such an unusual collar stretching up all the way to the back of the head. Sure was worth the trouble.

I like the softness of the colours of this proud bird.
