The best shots don't always come to you

This stunning photo of a burning pyre of automobiles was shot by a passing motorist, but it was not brought into our office. In fact, the amateur photographer did not even consider selling the pictures until I found him, in Green Bay, at about 9 p.m. Finding him took some intuition, a deep Rolodex and a lot of phone calls. My original plan was to use some small frame grabs I had seen from a video broadcast on CNN. The TV network was happy to share the video, but gave me the name of another person who took still photos. I reached the photographer via cell phone and he sent me the photos from his home at 10 p.m. Because I kept the copy chief and news editor informed, they knew a new photo was coming and we changed our front page long after normal deadline.
