Yellowstone National Park: Fountain Paint Pots Trail

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

The trail includes the Paint Pots themselves and other thermal features. They were originally called “mud puffs” by the 1871 Hayden survey. Tourists later called them the Mammoth Paint Pots. Current name was adopted in 1927. The mud is composed of clay and silica. The tinting of the mud in pink and gray is from iron oxides in the original rock.
