Pausing from probing for food among cattail stumps in the marsh. It's said to be the most common shorebird in North America, but reclusive and rarely seen. According to one source, its eyes are set so far back on its head that it has binocular vision to the rear for spotting predators while its head is down drilling for food. The beak tip is sensitive and can detect the larva and worms buried in the soft muck.
