Yellowstone National Park: Liberty Cap

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

At Mammoth Hot Springs...stands 45 feet high. It received its name from the 1871 Hayden Expedition for its resemblance to the caps worn by colonial patriots in the Revolutionary War. The cone formed from a steady flow of hot water emerging from a single source depositing travertine. Apparently the orifice became sealed by travertine and it is now an extinct feature.
