The Sylvia Hotel (1912), Vancouver's famous landmark

1154 Gilford Street, West End

"Once a landmark for ships approaching the harbour, the Sylvia looks more like a gigantic piece of topiary than a hotel.
Virginia creeper, planted by one of the original residents of the then Sylvia Court Apartments, completely covers the facade.
Neoclassical terracotta on the top floor and cornice, and a general old-fashioned, European ambience maintain the hotel's popularity."

From "Exploring Vancouver. The essential architectural guide" by Harold Kalman, Ron Phillips and Robin Ward
