4th place (tie) - Mired in the Past
by Helen Betts

Mt. Jackson, Virginia

For those who aren't familiar with this, it's a Confederate flag, a symbol of the South before and during the Civil War and all that went along with it. Since the South espoused slavery at that time, there are a lot of strong feelings about seeing this flag hung, but I found several over the weekend on a trip to the southern part of Virginia. I thought the B&W would express the "oldness" of the sentiment (and that the house was perfect), but in all honesty the flag does better in color, so I tried this http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/image/104829686 in demo folder -- the very first time I have ever done something with selective color! I guess it no longer qualifies as black and white, but I thought the effect was interesting. BTW the house had Confederate flags in the upstairs windows as well.

Nice capture, sharpdetails and textures - I like the colored flag version, too! I see a lot of Confederate flags in Kentucky, too.

Very nice shot! The building looks very small on the first view as it is surrounded by all the trees. In b/w the flag is not the dominating item, but more the structure. So this works well to show the power of b/w of changing the focus elements of an image.

Really a beautiful b&w image Helen. The tree on the left enhances the depth perception and I love all the textures! Your selective color version, in the Demo folder, is great as well; you did an excellent job on that!
