Long Life

Painswick, Glos. view map

Just some of the many yew trees in St. Mary's churchyard - local folklore has it that there shall never be more than 99 and that should a 100th grow the Devil would pull it out. However, various counts show that there are indeed more than 100. It is thought that a possible explanation for why so many English and Irish churchyards are populated with yews is that they were believed to be a symbol of long life

Doug ... voted ... I was at this same site but could not remember where it was in the Cotswold ... what a fantastic coincidence. I found this churchyard to be a photographer's delight ... and obviously you did as well. I've been able to use my shot on sympathy cards ...http://www.pbase.com/tombriggs/image/62582678
