Many of the houses are built close together and right along the river. In this case the image was made looking down an alley which ended at the river.

Your dark tunnel that we are peering out from leaves a lot to the imagination. Not having been there, I'd like to know what this, and where we are peering from. I do feel like a bit of a voyeur!

We both create frames within our frames to give the viewer not only a sense of life along the Mekong, but also make them feel as they were secret observers by shooting through this dark, enclosed space. In my version athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/91823668 , I place greater emphasis on the flow of the river, and I include only the woman at right and make her larger by including less darkness. Your image gives more context by including more darkness, more people, and more of the house in the background. The viewers will come away with different impressions of the same scene. We have shown two ways of skinning the same cat here (not the cat in that previous image, however.)
