Map - Scotland - Johnston - Historical Locations

Pearland, Texas

Poldean is a well kept secret, unless you're a descendant of Herbert of Johnston, Nese, Glenneybank & Poldean. Even then many of his descendants don't know about Poldean. Poldean was Herbert's holding of some 2,000 acres. Earlier Herbert had been granted other lands for service to the King of Scotland in the late 1400's. This family of Clan Johnston/e was centered for the most part within a 5 mile radius of Moffat.

The Old Gang of Wamphray helped to keep order in this area in days of olde and many of our Johnston/es were "charter members".

Lochwood is the site of the ancient, stone-tower ruin, the stronghold of Clan Johnstone in days of yore.

St. Anns is the current residence of our Clan Chief. The magnificent dwelling, a 3-story, baronial mansion with breath-taking gardens, is called Raehills. I had the priviledge of visiting there some 10 years ago and meeting our Chief's son, David, a fine young man. He gave us an historical background of the area, directions for sight-seeing and suggested to keep an eye out for the red deer. At the time I thought very little of seeing a red deer as I had seen plenty of white-tailed and mule deer in North America. "What's another deer?" I thought. Later while driving slowly down a quiet road just in front of us by some 20 yards a herd of red deer sauntered slowly across the road. They were truly magnificent! They far outstripped in size any North American deer that I had ever seen and matched elk. The huge buck looked at us with disdain while the other deer crossed without paying attention to us at all. It was quite a sight!
