The Round towers were a feauture of Ireland and Scotland - and maybe other places . The Original theory was that they were built as a refuge from eg Vikings - but now it is more or less certain - they were built as look out posts and as a beacon for Pilgrims on way to Glendalough .This tower is built on just one metre of foundation - and has stood for nearly 1500 years !!
