A coat of arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom is found on
each of the four gates that allow entrance into the
Iolani Palace grounds. The painted bronze plaques first
appeared on the gates during the reign of Queen Lili'uokalani
but during the overthrow of the Kingdom in 1893 they
were removed and sold at public auction. Ninety years later
they returned to Hawaii and, after extensive paint restoration
were reinstated on the gates in 1983.
