I made this image in mid-day light, when the sun is high and the shadows deep. The harsh, divisive shadows served my purpose perfectly, by abstracting rock and breaking it into separately defined curving segments. I underexposed the image, deepening the shadows and enriching the colors, intensifying their character. I framed the scene in greenery to add context. Some photographers would opt for rendering this image in black and white, which would abstract the rocks even further, intensifying their symbolic nature, and making the image more of an artistic statement than a landscape. My image, on the other hand, is intended as an abstract landscape, and landscapes for me are best defined as expressions of nature. The color, therefore, is critical to my purposes here.
