Aging Mushroom Grove

Lakeside MT back yard

The ShaggyMane, Coprinus comatus, is another 55 mile an hour mushroom. The shaggy bullet-shaped cap is unmistakable and the 2 or 3 look-alike Coprinus species are also choice edibles. Coprinus comatus is a widespread species that can fruit in staggering abundance. It prefers hard-packed ground and is frequently found along roads and trails. Coprinus comatus must be picked and cooked immediately or stored cold submerged in water. Otherwise it soon dissolves into black ink.
