Frauenkirche

The original Frauenkirche was one of the few buildings that apparently survived the bombing of Dresden on February 13/14 1945. However due to the intense heat generated by the fire-storms created by the air bombardment, the sandstone that was used to build the church was pulverized and the Frauenkirche collapsed February 15, 1945.
Rebuilding the Frauenkirche took from 1993 till 2005. Circa 3800 stones salvaged from the ruins could be re-used in the reconstruction of the church. Their blackish colour from the fire and from age make them stand out in the new building.
A significant part of the funds to rebuild the church, were gifts from companies and private persons from ca. 20 countries.
The cross on top of the dome, is a gift of the British people to Dresden. In 2000, it was handed over to the church by the Duke of Kent. In 2004, it was placed on top of the dome.
The cross that once topped the dome, now twisted and charred, stands to the right of the new altar.
On the new altar, a cross is placed made of original nails from the roof of the Coventry Cathedral. Coventry Cathedral was destroyed in an air bombardment in 1940. The cross is a sign of reconciliation.
