Here's an example of cloud-to-ground and cloud-to-cloud lightning. These both happened at virtually the same time in this 0.8sec exposure.

Canon EOS 30D ,Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Tripod, lightning trigger, cropped for comp full exif
