1933 - the U. S. Navy's 785-foot USS AKRON ZRS-4 flying over Miami

Miami, Florida

The rigid helium-filled AKRON was massive at 785 feet in length. She stopped at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base Miami at Opa-locka to refuel while enroute to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from New Jersey in January 1933. She returned in March 1933 enroute to Panama and then again on the way back north.

On April 3, 1933 the AKRON crashed into the sea off of New Jersey during a storm, killing Rear Admiral Moffett and 72 other passengers and crew.
