There used to be some 2-foot high light posts here, but they kept getting knocked over, so I guess the University decided to replace them. But in the meantime, people had to be prevented from tripping over the stubs and their wires.... The crates were originally just set on top, but that wasn't enough, so now they are held in place with cables screwed down onto the concrete.
