Commissioned in 1806, the Arc de Triomphe is 165 feet (49.5 meters) tall and 148 feet
(45 meters) wide. The columns of the arch feature richly detailed sculptures commemorating
French heroism. Access to the arch is via an underpass. Panoramic views of Paris may be seen
from the top of the arch. There are several pedestals on the roof where photographers may
stand to capture images of friends or family posing along the outer walkway with landmarks
in the background (for example, the Eiffel Tower).
IF YOU GO: Watch your footing on the roof. The surface of the roof is uneven and you can
easily stumble if you're not paying attention. Also, the outer walkway along the edge is
narrow and the step off to the roof varies considerably in height.
