Wheeler Beach, Narragansett, Rhode Island, 2008

Using a 28mm lens, I fill two thirds of my vertical frame with the richly colored rocks that form the base of the jetty making the southern boundary of Narragansett’s Wheeler Beach. The upper third of the image features the beach itself, as well as the low flying line of clouds that hang over the scene. The early morning light bathes the scene in warm colors that define the age of the ancient boulders that anchor the image.

Thanks, Tim -- I think you meant "cloudy" white balance, which is what I use to warm up my pictures and remove the blueish tinge often imparted by auto or sunny white balance. And yes, that white balance setting intensifies the warmth of the early morning sun here, particularly in the coloration of the rocks. The overall effect of cloudy white balance is more intense on the Sigma DP1 than it is on my other camera, the Leica V-Lux 1. So much so, that on future trips, I will probably use it more selectively, instead of as my default white balance setting as I did on this particular trip.

Your sunny white balance really works here. Even the rocks look inviting.

Thanks, Alina -- those boulders are the subject here, and I build the image around them.

The ancient boulders really anchor this image Phil. You described the composition of this photo beautifully.
