9/4/08 - Natural Catenaries

I'm back to the more abstract impression of spider webs. Straight on shots are nice but I'm in the mood for something different (dare to be different). A recent abstract web PAD of mine just won a contest prize at http://mountaintrailphoto.com/photo_contest_3.htm
Today's PAD is an unusual web. It is constructed so that the web was horizontal rather that the usual vertical. That orientation together with a very light dew and the rising sun allowed for photographing "natural catenaries" (theoretical shape of a hanging flexible chain or cable when supported at its ends and acted upon by a uniform gravitational force of its wieght). Guess who's a retired engineer?
105 mm 1:1 macro lens with a 1.4X TC; tripod; remote release. Nearly wide open lens with camera at an angle to the web in order to show only a narrow piece in focus and the rest as glowing orbs.
The PAD is a day late thanks to Comcast who had a day long internet service outage here.

Wow. I have never seen a spiderweb captured quite like this. Unique, beautifully executed, and a treat to view.
