Mona Lisa, 1503-1506 Leonardo da Vinci

This portrait is modelled by shade and light which comes both from the landscape and from the left. Leonardo worked at painting her soul, and not her outward appearance with sensitivity in her gaze and her enigmatic smile. This painting was hung in Napoleon bedchamber and then hung in the louvre. It was stolen in 1911, and vandalised in 1956, the painting would be the subject of numerous variations by 20th Century artists thus revealing their fascination for the piece, in their own unique way. Thats why this painting is now kept behind thick bullet proof glass and is heavily alarmed. The glass is also tinted, which helps protect the pigments against camera happy tourists taking pictures with their flash on.
