The neo-Classical atmosphere of Klauzál Square is reminiscent of Italian piazzas. It is the very heart of Szeged.
Kárász Street and Klauzál Square retain their original layouts defined by the three-storey early
eclectic buildings built in 1872 and 1873.
The space itself is characterised by restrained ornamentation, formality and clear-cut lines.
Ornate street lights, pillar clocks and stone pedestals evoke the past while the wooden benches,
terracotta flowerpots on stone stands and planting consciously create a Mediterranean atmosphere.
From spring to autumn, the brick-paved square is enlivened with welcoming outdoor cafés and patisseries.
The square was named after Gábor Klauzál (1804-1866), the minister of agriculture, industry and
commerce of Hungary's first democratically elected government and a member of parliament for
Szeged.
