The inner and outer pier lights replaced an 1859 lighthouse built on a hill overlooking the river, which was demolished for a parking lot in 1955. The original 5° Fresnel lens of this lighthouse is on display at the Priscilla U. Burns Heritage Center in St. Joseph. The original catwalk links this tower to the inner tower and to shore.
