The Carina nebula is classified as NGC 3372, it covers about three degrees of the sky which at a distance of 8800 light years corresponds to a diameter of about 460 light years. The bright star near the center of the image is Eta Carinae, which is one of the most massive and luminous stars known.
This image represents about 12 hours of exposures using a Hydrogen Alpha, or Ha filter.
