This icon - made by an unknown Umbrian painter - is cherished by the Franciscans as the symbol of their mission from God.
It was while praying at the foot of this cross that St. Francis received his commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church.

The original is now displayed at the St. Clare Church in Assisi.
