Chester's / Bloomer's Store / Chester's Residence

Research amongst former Charleswood residents of the 1940 era concludes these two buildings were located on the corner of Elmhurst Rd and Roblin Blvd. The brick building in the foreground was a grocery store/Post Office and operated by Tommy Chester then later by the Bloomer family. Later it was named "The Willows" and served as a short order restaurant ie hamburgers, pizza, etc.
The house behind the store was also owned by Tommy Chester who rented it to Bill McKennitt's mother and the family (Marnee, Bill & Sharon) lived there for a number of years.
If you're interested or ever lived in the area, send me an email and I'll provide some further history.

I am curious to know if there was ever a family with the last name of Rose that resided on Elmhurst Road. The first name of Bob or Robert. Or if anyone may have the name of the family that would have resided at what is today, 354 Elmhurst Road. Thank you.

Curious to know at any time was there a Rose family that resided on Elmhurst Road (perhaps the name is of a Bob or a Robert Rose). I am trying to find out who owned the property that is today 354 Elmhurst Road. thank you

I do remember the store well. When I was in my early teens, I leaned up against the front window of the store
(it was empty at the time) and fell into the window and broke it. Of course, I took off. Someone ratted on me and the police went home to my father. He had to pay $6 to have it fixed. That was likely a day's pay for him at the time.

Wow talk about memories. we lived at 29 Royal Road and that was where we did most of our shopping. my dad would give me a list of things to buy and that is where I would go. and of course pick up the mail. I had a paper route that only had 35 customers but it took me about 2 hours to do it as they were spread out. I hung out with Russell Swanky and Ron Ritchot. although I see pictures of Russell I do not see any of Ron. Thanks for the memories

I'm too young to remember the store and post office run by the Chesters. My sisters remember. I recall "The Willows" and also a bakery and the "Chicken Quinn" restaurant( Late 60's to possibly early 70's) at the building. The post office (Varsity View ) was at Bloomer's store on the west side of Sanderson's ( now Charleswood Department Store ) You entered the post office from the front at that time. ( 60's ). Later I think it was inside the main store.
