After fire destroyed the Jamestown Statehouse for the third time, the Virginia burgesses moved the colony's government to Middle Plantation, soon renamed Williamsburg. They built the first American structure called a "Capitol". The building that stands there today is the third Capitol on the site. The previous one burned down!
