We toured Crater Lake today. Neither of us had been there before, so it turned out to be a great surprise. The surprise is that no matter how many times you read about it or see pictures of it, seeing it for real is breath-taking. The day was beautiful, but a touch hazy which screwed up the photography. We are sitting at Crater Lake Lodge and you can see an island in the background which is Wizard Island. For reference, the top of it is about 750 feet above the level of the lake. We drove around the rim, stopping here and there to look and take pictures. About noon we headed down to the boat dock (1 mile walk and 700 feet down to the lake) and took a ride out to Wizard Island where we got off and hiked to the summit. This island is a cinder cone and there was a crater at the top. It was a hot dusty hike up there, but well worth the effort. All in all, Crater Lake was a way very cool place to go.
