As we toured Mariposa Grove near Yosemite National Park, my son spotted this Pileated Woodpecker on a rotting log, quite close to a paved hiking trail. It quickly caught the attention of dozens of tourists who stopped to watch the bird and for a few minutes, ignored the giant Sequoia trees.
