The Ney flute exists in several forms in Arabia, Persia and Turkey. The picture shows a turkish model using a special mouth piece. This ancient flute is assumed to be 4500 years old and shares the blowing techniques of the Shakuhachi and Xiao flutes in Japan and China.

Die ursprünglich persische "Ney" wird inzwischen in ganz Nordafrika gespielt, und ist leicht an ihrem hauchigen Klang erkennbar. Manche Instrumente wie das auf dem Foto haben ein Plastikmundstück, andere Instrumente werden an die Schneidezähne gehalten und angeblasen.
