Years ago I came across a memorable photography book that was all window shots, taken from inside and looking outside and showing the inside window frame. I tried some but could not get the exposure right until I later learned about fill flash. You exposure for the exterior scene and then add just enough fill flash to light the interior of the window. This is a very simple technique to master with digital because you can review the setup on the display immediately.
This was taken at the Edward wildlife refuge, in a public shelter http://www.fws.gov/desfbay/. I set up the shot and waited hoping for a visitor or two to come by that I might persuade to be a model. Alas it was the end of the day and I was left with only me. I did make arrangements with the bird but he got impatient and started to leave before I would trip the shutter. This image has a very photoshop collage look but it is a straight shot as described.
