Memorial Stadium, opened in 1955, was named in honour of the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives in WWII.
When it was replaced by a larger and more modern stadium a few years ago, the old structure and land were sold to a supermarket chain, who wanted to tear it down to build the new supermarket.
After much protest from the Veterans' associations, it was decided to incorporate the old super-structure into the new facility; thus the hybrid of old and new facades in the exterior.
