Yellowhammer

(emberiza citrinella)
The Yellowhammer is an elegant bunting which was once a very common farmland bird. As a seed feeder it is particularly associated with arable areas and is mostly absent in upland and grass farming areas. Its numbers have significantly decreased in recent years, it is thought due to changes in farming practice. More efficient harvesting and the lack of winter stubble fields have reduced the available feeding. It has a distinctive call often given from a high perch on a hawthorn bush which is traditional rendered as 'little bit of bread and no cheese'.
