Wood Duck

The Wood Duck, or Carolina Duck, is an American species which is found with some regularity in Scotland. However, all birds are assumed to originate from captive origins so the species only appears as Category E on the Scottish List. There are records of breeding Wood Duck in Scotland. The male bird is incredibly beautiful, rivalled only by another introduced species, the Mandarin Duck.
All these photos were taken at Banton Loch (or Townhead Reservoir) near Kilsyth. The bird had moved a few hundred metres up the Garrel Burn which flows into the north west corner of the loch.
