Velvet Scoter

(melanitta fusca)
The Velvet Scoter is a winter visitor to Scotland being found in small numbers along the North Sea coast. It breeds in northern Scandinavia and Russia. In Scotland it is predominately a sea duck. The bird in these photos was found on the River Leven by Loch Lomond which is an inland fresh water loch. It is probable that it was blown inland during the recent storms and high winds.
