Sultanhani Caravanserai

The caravanserais were the mediaeval equivalent of motorway service stations. They are dotted across Anatolia at day's journey distances and were built to protect merchants travelling the caravan routes that crossed Anatolia along the Roman-Byzantine road system.
The Sultanhani (sometimes spelled Sultanhan Caravanseri or Sultan Han Caravanserai) between Konya and Aksary is one of the best preserved of these Selcuk caravanserais. It was bult between 1226 and 1229. It consists of a courtyard enclosed inside thick curtain walls surrounded by stables and accommodation with a small elevated mosque in the centre. The rear section is a covered arched hall which would be used in the winter to store goods and shelter the camels.
