Redpolls are a confusing set of birds and are mostly poorly described and illustrated in the field guides. The birds photographed on this day at Clingera on Unst are probably all Common Redpolls, sometimes called Mealy Redpolls, though there was an impression that one of this group of five birds was paler and might have been an Arctic Redpoll. As Common Redpolls they could either have been migrants from Fenno-Scandia of sub-species flammea or could have been migrants from Greenland of sub-speies rostrata.
