Crossbills found on Shetland are most likely migrants from Scandinavia. We found this little family group of a male, female and juvenile in the garden of the hostel in Uyeasound on Unst. The birds looked to be starving and exhausted, most likely they had just arrived in from the sea, and were very approachable. One could barely stay awake whilst the other two were gorging themselves on the seeds from the berries of a whitebeam bush. They had gone by the next day so they must have recovered enough to continue their journey.
