Red Kite

(milvus milvus)
The Red Kite was virtually exterminated in the UK in the 19th century. Only a small pocket survived in mid Wales which was the nucleus for the current population around Gigrin Farm in Powys.
A re-introduction scheme has been on the go for several years now with four sites in Scotland - the first in the Black Isle followed by Ken-Dee area in Dumfries, Argaty near Doune in Stirlingshire and recently near Aberdeen. The population at the Argaty site in 2009 had 55 nesting pairs raising 94 chicks.
