The Ptarmigan is a bird of the high moors and mountains. In Scotland it is generally found above about the 2800 feet elevation level. In winter its plumage is pure white to match into its snowy landscape. In the spring it begins to moult in its summer plumage which is a vermiculated brown and black with feather edges buffy white.
