The Pied Flycatcher is a summer migrant usually arriving in central Scotland in late April. It can be found in mature woodlands, particularly oak woods whre it nests in holes, taking readily to nest boxes. It has a pleasant slightly hesitant song which can be confused with Common Redstart but it quickly stops singing once it has begun nesting. The young hatch and fledge remarkably quickly in as little as 25 to 29 days and after they disperse it can be almost impossible to locate a bird even in its favoured woods.
