The Parrot Crossbill breeds in the pine forests of Scandinavia where it is resident all year. It is an irruptive species, just occasionally a swarm of birds will migrate away from their normal location. Sometimes such irruptive groups will arrive in Scotland where they can become resident and establish a small breeding population usually in ancient Scots Pine forests - so mainly in Speyside and the Cairngorms area.
An irruption occurred in the autumn of 2017 when around 20-30 birds appeared in Shetland. The birds remained on the islands for a couple of weeks feeding in pine plantations and gardens. Once this food source was exhausted the birds disappeared, hopefully they may have made landfall on the Scottish mainland and found a suitable habitat.
