Lens Test

Test shots with a Canon 400 DO and a 100-400 Zoom lens and extender combinations.
For all except the last image - all photographed with Canon 1D Mk4 body and all tripod mounted. Photos cropped to same subject. For first 6 no other editing, for second 6 sharpened and resized to same size. Note that the 100-400 Zoom will not autofocus with a 2X extender hence the manual focus.
The last image - digiscoped with a Swarovski ATS65HD telescope, Swarovski DCA adaptor and Nikon 1 V1 camera.
Conclusions ? Very much as expected - the 400DO prime lens is better to some degree, that is sharper, than the 100-400 zoom lens. However it is more than £4000 more expensive and weighs 0.56Kg more. So is it worth it and can you comfortably carry it about all day ? I am undecided right now. Also the versatility of the zoom lens can be useful on some occasions and makes for easier framing of flying shots.
