(calcarius lapponicus)
The Lapland Bunting breeds in upland Scandinavia and in the high arctic tundra regions. Most birds migrate south east to winter on the steppes of central and south east Europe but a few will winter on coastal fields and sea shores of Western Europe. This pair were feeding in a sheep penn by the airstrip on Fair Isle on seeds which one of the observatory wardens had put down in an attempt to lure the birds into a ringing trap. It is not a bird which I had seen often so I was pleased with these views.
