Jackdaw

(corvus monedula)
The Jackdaw is usually dismissed as a crow by the layman. It is a member of the crow family but compared with the others it is much smaller and a more elegant bird. It is very social and is usually found in flocks, often gathering into large groups at favoured roosting spots. It has a distinctive sharp call which easily separates it from the harsh calls of other crows. In urban areas they have a habit of nesting in chimneys, even smoking ones leading to its old name of the Chimney Crow.
