The Hooded Merganser is a vagrant to the UK, its usual range is in eastern USA and Canada. It is a species which is often kept in waterfowl collections so any birds found are usually of dubious origin although it has recently been accepted onto the British list. The bird photographed here was present on a pond at Tayport, Fife for a couple of weeks in November 2008; it is a female bird. It's status has not yet been decided by the SBRC.
