Leaving Punta Tortuga Negra we sailed north up the Bolivar Channel, an area where the boat captain had promised us that we would see some whales. He was true to his word and at one point he had the boat in the middle of a pod of about ten Bryde's Whales which were surfacing and blowing around us. Also in the channel were hundreds of Grey and Red-necked Phalaropes.
Punta Vicente Roca is a collapsed volcano caldera with shattered cliffs falling straight into the sea. We had a great snorkeling session here in the company of Galapagos Penguins and Sea Lions and more turtles than you could count. The highlight though was the view of several Sun Fish (or Mola Mola) which cruised past our boat waving their strange dorsal fin in the air. They look very shark-like but are harmless.
In the early afternoon we left Punta Vicente Roca we set out on the long sail towards Genovesa which would take until dawn the next day. On the way we crossed the equator into the northern hemisphere.
